**SD SCIENCE FESTIVAL EXPO --GREAT FAMILY SCIENCE OPPORTUNITY -- SATURDAY, MARCH 27 @ PETCO PARK**

Next week is the San Diego Science Festival... all week long there will be special science events around town.

Next Saturday, March 27th there will be an all day family event at Petco Park -- with FREE ADMISSION featuring 150 HANDS-ON activities!

#2 The MacGyver Challenge – Turning Trash to Treasure

Use recyclable items: milk cartons, jugs, water bottles, used CDs, paper, etc. Design and build something USEFUL using these items.

#3 WALK FOR A WEEK:

Figure out how many miles your family regularly drives a week -- to work, school, church, stores, errands, practice, family, friends, etc.

Come up with a plan to save gas. Figure out ways to carpool/ walk/ ride bikes/ use public transportation INSTEAD of driving.

Implement your plan for a week. Keep a journal. Write down what you did and how you and your family saved driving time and gas.

#4 WATER WASTERS?

Figure out how much water your family uses each day (can your parents show you your water meter? Or water BILL? Do you know where it is?) Does your family have ways to IMPROVE?

àCome up with a plan to save water. Figure out ways to reduce or reuse or recycle water at your house.

#5 SORTING IT OUT (TRASH):

Americans are still the undisputed champions of trash, dumping 4.6 pounds per person per day, according to the E.P.A.’s most recent figures. More than half of that ends up in landfills or is incinerated.

à Go through your family’s trash – are you throwing away items that could be recycled? Does your trash take a lot of space? Make a list of trash your family throws out.

àMake a plan to SORT all of your family’s trash/ recyclables for a week and make LESS waste –

6th-Update - March 1-5

Hi,
****TRIMESTER 2 FINISHES UP -- LAST DAY TO TURN IN WORK -- THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 5**
Please check your child's WEB GRADES -- is everything caught up?

***THIS WEEK IN SCIENCE***
We are studying ECOLOGY (Chapter 12) in book and using the laptop computers -- if your child says they have nothing to work on, have them REVIEW CHAPTER 12 for 5-10 minutes!

Ask your child questions -- have them EXPLAIN what they are learning/ doing. SHOW you their work.

Stay away from asking "yes and no" questions.

Check their binder/ backpack -- is it organized??? NOW is the best time!
